WOW! This was one of my favorite episodes EVER. I loved the action, the unpredictable events, and the dialogue was incredible! Man, that scene where he and Locke are talking in his living room.

I love how you totally don’t know what Ben is thinking. He was getting very docile and accomadating. Now you can sort of see his ruthless nature.

and who saw Locke’s father coming? we figured it could be him behind the door, but gagged and on a chair?

literally, a second a half before locke gets thrown out the window I said, “What, is he going to throw him out the window?” my question was answered pretty quickly.

what’s with the box. A new mystery! the mystery of the island goes deeper!

I don’t know why I didn’t think so, but I didn’t even think Kate would get captured again! stupid super kate. they shoulda had a gooder plan, to quote myself in my younger days.

    LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this episode!

I was thinking that Ben was referring to the box that Locke’s father is in. Not only was I trying to figure out was was going through Ben’s head, I was also trying to figure out what Locke was thinking. At first I was concerned that Locke would be bamboozled once again (as his father kept doing to him). But apparently he has learned. I was relieved to discover that Locke was actually on to Ben.

I want to know if Jack’s whisper in Kate’s ear was, “I will be back for you ALL.” or “I will be back for YOU.” English is just not accomodating enough in these situations. This is where they should have been speaking [v_e_r_y slowly, mind you] in Koine or French! ;) Or he could have just written it out in Koine or French and given us time to read it. ;)

Previews – OK, there are traitors among our Losties. [Let's hope they include those irritating new characters!] And the previews made it look as if Sawyer was also a traitor. I got thinking about that and it gave me possibilities. Sawyer, a con man, could be tied somehow to Locke’s father, a con man. Perhaps Sawyer was supposed to do something for the Others, but didn’t. That might explain why that guy was so furious at Sawyer over his wife’s death and why he blamed Sawyer and kept attacking him. It just wasn’t making sense to me why the guy focused his anger on Sawyer. The question, of course, is WHEN would Sawyer have had contact with the Others or with Lock’s father?

I wasn’t going to say anything about it because it is a spoiler of sorts, but my mom mentioned it first, so its fair game. I think Locke’s dad is the O.G. Sawyer. I believe there was a previous episode where Sawyer had mentioned being in Tallahassee when speaking with Jack. But yeah, he’s the O.G. Sawyer, has to be. Can’t wait to see Sawyer’s reaction when he sees him!

As far as the traitor goes, I believe they all suspect Sawyer because he was with the ‘others’, but it ends up being someone else. I think there is something to the fact that everyone else is totally fine with Paulo and Nikki and when Sawyer saw them he was like, “Who the heck are you?!” At first I thought that that was a shout out to the fans who haven’t been latching onto them, but now I think it is more of a clue that they don’t fit in and somehow worked their way into the camp. or i could be totally wrong.

The Box- they had Cooper in the box before. Here’s a good theory on the box: I don’t believe that’s a literal box or container from which are conjured various things/people. Obviously Cooper was already there since Ben said that. Ben was just trying to explain things to Locke in a way he could understand. This sounds silly, but imagine a doctor in physics explaining gravity (which still isn’t fully understood) versus a kindergarten teacher explaining gravity. Locke hasn’t learned enough to get into graduate school yet. Better yet, imagine all the concepts that our human minds are incapable of grasping yet God understands perfectly because He created them. Such a concept would make any explanation of them a moot point. That’s kind of how I see Ben and Locke on a smaller scale. There are these things that Kate and Locke aren’t able to understand…but how will they be able to explain things to the viewers? It makes me wonder how much they’ll never reveal, because to invent explanations for things that we supposedly can’t understand would make the explanation a letdown.

Here’s an interesting tie-in: Apparently Hurley’s lawyer was in the same building as Locke’s father. Remember Hurley saw someone falling past the window?

I think it’s interesting how the writers have us constantly changing our minds about WHO is the central character tieing everything together. I’ve often thought it was Jack, at other times I think it’s Jack’s father and sometimes I have thought it’s Desmond. Now they’ve got me considering that it’s Locke.

Just a possibility: but is Locke REALLY seeing his father bound and gagged or is this a hallucination of some sort. Is he seeing what he wants to see, as Ben intimated when first describing “the box”, but it’s not real? And remember back when Ms. Klugh [the Other who was recently shot by Mikhail] threated Walt with having to go in to “the room” if he wasn’t quiet, when Walt was trying to tell his father about what his life with the Others had been like? Does that tie in to this place?

One odd thing – why was Locke wet after “blowing up” the submarine? When did he go into the water? And did you notice all the Dharma food in Ben’s fridge? Is Dharma supplying them with food? Are the drops continuing because of the presence of The Others? Are they, therefore, tied in to Dharma?

Apparently Ben is the only one who was born on the island. The others were all recruited. Was he the child of Dharma employees?

And Jack and Kate are still an item. The old electricity is still there – they just have a little “Sawyer” hurdle to overcome. I thought it was interesting that Kate seemed most concerned that Jack was leaving her. In previous seasons SHE has NOT wanted to get off the island, because she’d have to start running again. But apparently she’s even more concerned now about the possibility of Jack leaving her behind. I thought that was a really touching scene (though I’m sure Tim could care less ;) And who knew Jack could play the piano? That has to be significant. Ideas?
[Jack was apparently more responsive to childhood piano lessons than some offspring I could mention...]

    1. that wasn’t Locke falling from Hurley’s accountant’s building. That happened within a few months of him going to Australia and Locke had been paralyzed for 4 years. the time line doesn’t match. That and the guy that fell in Hurley’s flashback was falling so you could see his side, whereas Locke was falling with his feet facing the building. I thought the same thing, but found out later that that wasn’t the case.

    2. i think the room Walt was talking about was room #23. I don’t think they would have brought Walt to their home, but kept him where they do their research.

    3. Ben wasn’t the only one. He said ‘most’ of the people were recruited. there are others like him.

    4. they just don’t have a Sawyer hurdle, Kate has a ‘Juliet’ hurdle. that’s going to get ugly.

    5. Jack played the piano the night before his wedding. so, most knew he played the piano. Kate didn’t, though. And his father probably took severe lengths to make sure he practiced. He probably didn’t put the piano in an unheated room in a house in NH.

We did it! After months of catching up (from the middle of Season 1, no less), Nichelle and I are current with Season 3. Now the problem is that it nearly kills us to have to wait a week between episodes.

I just read on Slashdot that Dr. Who and Lost have been renewed for season 4.

Here’s some interesting trivia: “dharma” is Sanscrit for “the rules of right and wrong.”

Okay, back to this week …

Locke is beginning to scare me. He seems to be making irrational decisions based on his “islandology” – much like a Christian schooled in too much neofundamentalism and not enough context. Blowing up the submarine was insane, just like blowing up the satellite station: He might just as well have taken the submarine for a ride (Sayid probably knows how to operate it), or removed key parts. Blowing it up seems like a career limiting move.

However, the bit with his father trying to kill him was awesome. (Health question: Would one feel one’s own back breaking? Locke was only paraplegic rather than quadriplegic, but I wonder.)

We predicted, although not much before, that Locke’s father would show up via “the box”; I thought he would be dead. Has anyone considered the possibility that these may be natural occurrences. Ben and select “others” may still have contact with the outside world, and may merely have superior intel. Has there been anything revealed by the “others” that couldn’t be determined by careful background investigations or detective work with an unlimited expense account, which Dharma appears to have? For that matter, a snatch-and-grab could have then had delivered Locke’s father via the food drops.

The healings are fascinating. We’ve had Rose, Locke, and Jin healed of serious problems. Any others that I’ve missed?

Nichelle and I love the fact that the actress who plays Alex does indeed resemble the actress who plays Rousseau.

I read a partial spoiler that indicates we might get some very disturbing news about one of the characters, but I won’t share it here. Definitely some trouble coming with Juliette/Kate/Jack/Sawyer.

Does anyone hate any character more than Michael? I actually prefer Ben to him. Even Sawyer is less harmfully selfish.

The summer hiatus is going to kill us!

P.S.: Our friend Phil tells us the reasons Anna Lucia was nixed is she got arrested “in real life.”

  7. ehudadams said,

Anna Lucia- that was part of it. Both her and Libby were nabbed on the same night for DUI. Another part is that everything I’ve heard says she was intolerable on the set, no one liked her, and no one really liked her character.

Here’s an interesting tidbit: “Anthony Cooper, Adam Seward” is an anagram for “Sawyer, the con man, a poor dad”.

And to set the record, this is a spoiler free zone. NO SPOILERS. I hate spoilers because that isn’t how they intend you to watch the show.

I was watching “Malcolm in the Middle” the other day, and Alex was one of Malcolm’s friends, his really only friend who was a girl. funny to see her in that role.

Another interesting thing I read: the box isn’t a real box, but somewhere you go and the island brings you what you want. Ben went and asked for a Spinal Surgeon. Low and behold, Jack falls from the sky. Now did he ask for Anthony Cooper or did Locke unwittingly?

Michael is somewhat hard to hate, since he hasn’t been around since the end of season 2.

  8. Doug Wilcox said,

    I promise, no spoilers!

Remember, for Nichelle and I, the end of Season 2 was only 2 weeks ago. I hold virtual grudges a long time.

Welcome, Doug! Another country heard from!

Hurray! Another reason to look forward to 2008! [I'm pretty easy to please. ;) I don't have cable anymore (no SciFi, sigh...), but there are always DVDs!]

So, Doug, are you suggesting that the Others ARE definitely Dharma? If that’s so, who are/were “the hostiles”? Maybe that’s why the fence was built. Maybe they’re still out there…da-da-dum…

As for Jin “being healed”. We don’t really know that for sure. Sun DID have an affair – it could be Mr. Hotelman’s child. How will they ever know- if he’s born bald?

And I miss Bernard and Rose. I understand they weren’t signed for this season because their story line wasn’t active. I hope they bring them back next season. I miss Rose’s sensible advice and encouraging manner. Bernard was getting a little annoying, but it was all for love.

Interesting idea about the box, Tim. So “the box” would be under the control of “the island”? The Others and Dharma must have ended up there because of the island’s special qualities, but I don’t think they have any more idea about how the island operates than the lostees do. Except for Locke, of course, who speaks “islandese” apparently.

It IS a good question about why Locke was healed and Ben isn’t. Although I remember that when Locke broke his foot, it DID heal quickly, but it still took some time. It hasn’t been that long since Ben’s surgery. Maybe he is healing quickly and not even aware of it. Or maybe it has something to do with time shifts! I’m still hot on the idea of time behaving differently on the island than in the rest of the world. I DO think time changed when the hatch imploded, which is why they have lost contact with the outside world. But I’m not sure what it would have been like before that happened. There had to be some kind of interactions of time between the island and the outside world – they were able to communicate, come and go in the submarine, get food drops from the outside world.

And I’ll never like Michael again…I don’t care how long he’s gone. I still think he might show up again.

I think we can reconile “the box” with BMT’s theories about temporal disalignment:

That’s it! And then…and then…Scully and Mulder come out of the Tardis after the Doctor, right? And Scully is trying to convince Mulder that it’s all cultic ritual, right?
[I think Tim is going to yell at us for straying...Jen, where are you? Stop us!]]

Interestingly, I understand that the actor who plays Locke also acted in X-Files. I didn’t recognize him though…maybe he had monster/alien make-up on…
