Worthless!
Absolutely worthless!
This did nothing to advance the overall plot, and nothing that we really cared about. I have almost as little sympathy for Nikki and Paulo as I do for Michael (but not as much contempt, yet). This was a wasted episode.
The ongoing duplicity with Paulo and Nikki was interesting, but the only really bright spot was the ending twist.
And, I see in the previews that the Kate-Juliette battle will take real form.

Yeah, I don’t think anyone has sympathy for them. The best thing I did like about this was that it was straight out Alfred Hitchcock. Kept waiting for him to show up in the background somewhere.
It was neat to kind of get pictures of the whole show and see them trace it all the way through. To see Boone, Shannon, Arndst, and Ethan.
I was hoping that they had more of a connection to the others than just that. But they now have one of their radios, which is good. And I bet that it will never have to be recharged, just like Jack Bauer’s phone.
It was also interesting to see Juliet say that Jack was cute and Ben say how he maninpulates people. That means I was right about why Sawyer, and Kate were brought, too!

I can’t believe that I bothered to stay up to watch the tape after I got home from Pulpit Committee Meeting last night! These were not sympathetic OR well-rounded characters. I could care less what happened to them, as long as they were removed from the show. The twist at the end was certainly gruesome, however! But all I could do was see them as “characters”, not people. The others may do hateful things, but the writers have invested our interest in them by making them multi-dimensional. Even Ben has a redeeming quality when it comes to his love for Alex.
Seeing them trying to fit Paolo and Nikki into the previous story was rather humorous. I found myself trying to decide if they completely retaped some scene backgrounds in order to include them, or if it was “cut and paste”. It WAS nice to remember how much I loathed Shannon! They really camped up her role a bit! In all, the episode was more like a “HS Reunion” than a serious episode – more like “Who can we invite back for a bit part?”, than an advancement of the storyline.
It was also a prime example of how the survivors never talk to each other. Nikki and Paolo discovered all those places BEFORE anyone else and NEVER told anyone?
We did learn a little more about the backstory – Ben’s purpose in using Michael and kidnapping Sawyer and Kate along with Jack was in order to manipulate Jack. Did they PLAN to throw Kate and Sawyer together and make sure Jack saw it so he would be willing to arrange his own ticket off the island? They DID plan for him to see it…it was just too convenient that Jack’s prison door was left open and the door to the monitoring room was ajar and no one was manning the monitors.
And Charlie came clean with Sun [shouldn't she be looking a little bit pregnant by now?], maybe cleaning his slate before his “untimely death”? And even Sawyer seemed repentent – isn’t it hard to imagine him suggesting such a thing now that he has bonded with the others? I have to keep reminding myself how little real time has supposedly passed so far.
My favorite part was Sawyer’s repeated phrases, “Who ARE you?” and “Who ARE they?” remarks throughout the episode. He was certainly speaking for all of us.

I didn’t catch what Sawyer was reading this time. Did anyone else?

BMT has the best comments!
Hasn’t Sun only known about her pregnancy for about 10 days, Island-time?
For the record, I would not have given up the diamonds. (I might have shared them, but I’d expect that, even if I never got off the island, diamonds would still come in handy for their value and attractiveness, if for nothing else than jewelry.
But I desperately wanted to see what was up with Jack, the submarine, etc.; this was not a welcome diversion.

It was actually an Agatha Christie book, “Evil Under the Sun”.
Hercule Poirot is called in to investigate a case for an insurance company regarding firstly a dead woman’s body found on a moor and then a important diamond sent to the company to be insured turns out to be a fake. Poirot discovers that the diamond was bought for Arlena Marshall by Sir Horace Platt and Arlena is on her honeymoon with her husband and step-daughter on a tropical island hotel. He joins them on the island and finds that everybody else starts to hate Arlena for different reasons – refusing to do a stage show, stopping a book, and for having an open affair with Patrick Redfern, another guest, in full view of his shy wife. So it’s only a matter of time before Arlena turns up dead, strangled and Poirot must find out who it is…

it seemed as thought the dumping of the diamonds into the grave was a way for Sawyer to tell them that he wouldn’t kill them for greed’s sake. He’s never been like that. He’ll mess you over pretty good, but the only person he wants to kill is the true Sawyer.

That’s my boy…the Agatha Christie fan.
I don’t remember that story. Is that one of the ones you got for Christmas a few years ago?

No, I got it off the internet. I got “Ten Little Indians” which I had read before, but love. and I also got “Murder on the Orient Express” which I hadn’t. I also read “Murder on the Nile” in like High School.

After having been in Egypt, I decided to reread “Murder on the Nile”, in order to take in the atmosphere of Egypt. I have to say that I was GREATLY disappointed and didn’t end up finishing it. There wasn’t as much “atmosphere” as I had hoped for. She spent most of her time describing her veddy-English characters.
I did get her WONDERFUL little autobiographical book, “Tell Me How You Live”. It’s made my “favorite” book list! After her first husband left her, she married an archaeologist and travelled with him on his digs in Syria during the years between WWI and WWII. The flavor of the people and the country and the times is just fantastic! After you graduate I’ll loan you the book. I think you would greatly enjoy it. It’s a snapshot of a time before the Near East was heavily influenced by Western Europe. It’s amazing to see how much animosity there was among the different cultural groups living together in that area. Or…maybe not so surprising. Those animosities are deeply rooted! It’s also quite humorous and I found myself hooting out loud as I read it. You’d like it!
[She wrote some of her books while she was on these archaeology digs.]

Nikki and Palo were perfect for eachother. Is she every man’s nightmare- cute little blond thing that grows bitchier by the day?
It’s interesting how much we trust Sawyer now, I never thought he was responsible through the whole thing.
Basically they just used Nikki and Palo to explain some things and to have a cast reunion.

Isn’t “cute” and “blonde” oxymoronic, or am I showing my own prejudices? I don’t actually think Nikki is very cute; her face seems too angular too me, but, again, I’m thrown off by the blondeness.
It is interesting to see Sawyer developing as a generally responsible but still primarily selfish person. Of course, matching him up with Kate, who has similar tendencies (as well as a con-person background) is certainly going to be explosive. I don’t think honesty is going to be an operating principle in their relationship.
I still feel like we were robbed by this episode, although I liked the additional background. Two more days until the next one …

Ahem…Mr. W….remember you’re talking to a family full of blondes and redheads! Perhaps I’ll remind you of that “oxymoron” the next time you e-mail me with a meaty question. No…no…I’m not bitter…;) Didn’t Star Trek even have a few blondes? Oh yeah…they were always the “dispensible ones” who never survived…
Starting next week I will be at a meeting EVERY Wednesday night! I considered whining about the choice of night, but decided I was on the very edge of tumbling down the staircase of spiritual maturity…a significant distance! So I will set the alarm clock to make sure Mr. C. doesn’t forget to tape it and if I end up missing scenes, you guys can fill me in. [I STILL have no idea what Tricia Tanaka looked like!]

Yes, I was aware of the audience. That’s what made my comment even more fun; you will also note that I haven’t criticized redheads. Personally, I think Yunjin Kim (Sun Kwon) overshadows everyone else. I don’t think any of the blondes on Lost have been head-turners (except in the opposite direction perhaps). Has anyone noticed that Juliette resembles Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) in many of her facial expressions?
You’ll be at a meeting past 10:00 p.m.? Are you working on a new English translation of the New Testament?
If you miss an episode, we can make you a tape, or you can come to our house and spend 42 minutes watching it in high-definition video with digital surround audio.
