I can’t believe the cliffhanger ending! I wasn’t really watching the time, so it caught me completely by surprise.
The encounter between the girl Sayid was looking for and Charlie was great.
If I ever get stuck on the Lost islands, I definitely want Alex and Rousseau on my side!

We didn’t learn a ton last night, but here’s my list.
1. I KNEW that wire that went into the ocean was significant. I’m just calling that I’ve been saying that since the first season. (was that when Sayid found Rousseau?
2. Ben definitely has lost it. he’s not taking orders from Jacob, and clearly only fears him when he’s with him. Has he been putting words in his mouth this whole time?
3. Jack’s back. taking the leadership role that he never really wanted to.
4. who were the people in the underwater hatch?
more later!

I completely missed that it was Sayid’s girl who Charlie saved!! That’s also a good point about the similar characters of Alex and Rousseau. The fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree, eh?…I didn’t think about that before, but it’s certainly true.
Overall…I found myself getting sniffy whenever another “best memory” was added to Charlie’s list. And when he got to #!, I just started crying. Sentimental or what?
It was also interesting to see how torn Desmond is every time he has another “image” of Charlie’s death. It shows his humanity and what a terrible burden such an ability would be. Unlike that strange white-haired lady, Desmond is not becoming callous about the death of another person. It’s NOT “just another day”…”another inevitability so why bother crying over it ” to him.
Each successive possibility of Charlies’ death seems to take on increasing importance concerning the outcome. If he had been killed by lightening the first time…it would have affected no one. The second time Claire would have drowned if Charlie had died trying to save her. The time when he was supposed to get the arrow in the neck- they would probably have stopped looking for the parachutist, who would have in turn died without their intervention. THIS time it involves them being ultimately rescued…much more important a consequence! Of course, the time between Charlie disabling the signal jammer and their being rescued is indeterminate! [We now know EXACTLY how long it will take for them to be rescued - three more seasons!] Was one of the women guards the stewardess from their airplane? How could they have gotten her so completely turned around?
Back to the Others. Benry has quite a few thugs he’s gathered around him, hasn’t he? These are not the same caliber of people that Dharma was recruiting! It looks like his leadership is beginning to unravel…though I suspect it will take three more years to totally collapse. At first when they were setting up the dynamite, I was thinking I didn’t want Tom or some of the other Others to be killed. The thugs are fair game…as is Benry.

I’m calling a division in the others. I’m fairly certain that Alex and ben will reacha definite breaking point, and Ben may be driven to want to kill her. But Richard also seems to not be taking things well. He may rebel. All Ben will have around him are his thugs. It’d be nice to see Tom leave, also. It’s great how they’ve made us sympathize with some of the others.

Ben seemed really distressed. It was most unusual for him.
One of the things I love about the writing in “Lost” is that virtually none of the characters are stereotypical, or even simple. They seem very real in their complexiities. The writers have also been masterful at revealing things slowly that can completely alter one’s perspective. The way Jin was revealed, for example, left me hating him for many episodes, only to discover he’s one of the most decent Losties on the island. Conversely, Sun was painted in glorious light, but we are slowly learning that her night goes well beyond twilight.

Literary clues: Let’s hear it for Lewis Carroll. What can we remember from his two books? The Dharma station is called “The Looking Glass” [and Charlie went "Through" it...so things must NOT end up being what was expected, hmmm?] and those white rabbits keep showing up. Ben, as a child, had a white rabbit. And they frightened Sawyer with the white rabbit in the cage, making him think he would die if he exerted himself too much.
It makes sense to raise rabbits for meat…easy and plentiful! But they also have to fit in with “The Looking Glass”. Did anyone see any other references to Lewis Carroll?

Charlie didn’t go through the looking glass; he went into the looking glass.

Tjat was a sleeper! I will comment on the purely shallow aspects of the show:
Did Kate put sunless tanner on her face?
The guy with Ben who doesn’t age- maybe he takes good care of his skin- he seems to wear eyeliner.
Alex give me the brand and color of you lip gloss! not too shiny- great color!
Jack’s wrinkles and grey hair have really come out since he got back from captivity with the others… must have run out of “Just for Men”.
Claire’s bangs are more attractive with the part on the side.
That baby just gets cuter every episode.
Desmond has a weird Adam’s apple- small, pointy and very active.
How do the ladies get their little cotton blouses so wrinkle-free? Fresh sea air?
Did Kate pass the sunless tanner bottle to Julliette?
Rose- way to go on the new hair do- very nice.
Charlie actually looked attractive this episode.
Can Sawyer’s hair get anymore oily and stringy?… we’ll have to wait for the season finale!

Concerning the eyeliner – THAT’S what makes me think “Egyptian” when I see him!! Or maybe “pirate”, a la Johnny Depp. I think he’s purposely got a “historical” look. And I think he’s on to Ben, that he’ll end up teaming with Locke, if Locke isn’t dead.
Beth, you’re a tad “baby conscious” now.
Aaron IS cute, but I think you notice him more than the rest of us do. Are they using different babies? Remember they are not in our “real time”. By “island time”, how old would he be now? Do you think he looks the right size for that?
Yes, you’re right, Charlie did look better this episode. I thought he was incredibly grungy [Rock star grungy] the first season. His fingernails and hands just drove me crazy. And I cringed whenever he would write on himself. YUCK!
Did anyone, besides me, watch the Lost Special last night? The writers/producers verified some things that some people had thought weren’t necessarily certain. I’ll look at it again and write down a few things, to bring us all up to date. We can definitely STOP speculating on some things – things they said they had “answered” and are no longer questions to be asking.

yeah, the two confirmations that meant the most were that the 1. the smoke monster is making the eminations and 2. that Richard was acting by himself when he took Sawyer’s file to Locke.

They also said once again – It’s NOT purgatory! Everyone is alive.
Desmond’s accidental lack of button pushing released an emanation that brought down the plane. Nobody planned it. (I know we’re settled on that, but some people are still debating it!)
Kate may have chosen who to be with first… but the story’s not over. One of the guys seemed pretty sure Sawyer is just a brief fling. Her heart lies elsewhere. [knew this would be of importance to you, Tim.
]
The off-island, pre-crash interaction of characters is just to demonstrate how the world is interrelated. It’s not a significant story line in itself. [I remember at one point we speculated that everyone might be connected somehow to Jack.]
It was confirmed that the island is reading their memories and recreating them [Jack's Dad, Kate's horse, etc.]. Is that what you meant by “emanations”, Tim? I still don’t know if these recreations retain their existence or are just temporary. It’s possible the polar bears just escaped from the Dharma pens and had nothing to do with Walt reading the comic book. Think GOOD thoughts, everyone!
They also said that people are being “redeemed” on the island. They have a second chance and are changing their lives from what they had been like. It’s not a straight linear progression, of course, but overall people are changing their lives.
Jack and Locke are acting at cross purposes. Jack wants to get everyone OFF the island and Locke wants to keep everyone ON the island. I don’t understand why Locke wouldn’t be satisfied with staying on the island himself, without requiring everyone else to. Except it might get lonely… or maybe he’s concerned about how the island will change if it is “found”. I can see how Jack and Locke may end up actually opposing one another. How far would they go? [Jack's recent more aggressive attitude is rather disturbing!]

oh, another thing is that the box is a metaphor for the whole island, not a particular place.

A “sleeper”? Come on, Beth.
Of course, we have no idea what Locke was been up to this episode. They definitely wanted to make Charlie as presentable as possible for this episode. Apparently now that he’s kicked his drug habit, personal hygiene matters to him. Maybe it makes the audience more sympathetic toward him.
Only one episode left this season … and allegedly (based on the tagline from the preview) “everything changes.”
I’m going to be very, very sad to part with this for the summer.
